Malawi Cultural Understanding and Language Proficiency (CULP) Trip Report

Out of all the Summer ROTC programs, none compare to the opportunity you will receive with CULP. This past summer, I traveled to Malawi, a small country in southeast Africa, with 10 other cadets from across the country.  We went with one mission, and that was to immerse ourselves in the Malawian culture. With the guidance of our cadre members and the Malawian Defense Force, we executed this mission by traveling, training, exploring, and learning throughout Malawi. Whether it was by playing soccer on the beach of Lake Malawi, climbing up and down mountains at a Malawian Airborne Battalion pace, shooting with Malawian Defense Force officer cadets, or visiting schools and receiving performances by school children on Malawian Culture, we achieved the mission. The cultural immersion I received is valuable to any aspiring Army officer, and I will be sure to bring it with me on my future endeavors. These experiences Malawi offered me are invaluable, and I am grateful to have been given the opportunity this summer.  Cadet Samuel Boyles.
