App State ROTC has had a reputation as a strong program for decades. The proof is in the Mountaineer Battalion Cadet’s performance in competitions, Cadet Summer Training, Accessions ranking, and most significantly, in the professionalism and contributions of its alumni in the Army. A recent award ceremony provided public recognition of that quality. The 4th ROTC Brigade Leadership team, Colonel Mike Farmer and Command Sergeant Major Nathaniel Atkinson, presented the MacArthur Award to the Battalion in a ceremony on March 20th in the Student Union.
The award recognizes eight schools, selected from among the 274 senior Army Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC) units nationwide, as the top programs in the country. Past winners are the most successful of Cadet Command in accomplishing their mission of training and commissioning lieutenants entering the Army each year. Award-winning programs best represent the ideals of the watchwords, Duty-Honor-Country, and the legacy of leadership as practiced by General Douglas MacArthur. A previous Commander has stated; “The ROTC motto is leadership excellence, and these programs exemplify that ethos through their hard work and dedication. Being named a MacArthur Award winner acknowledges that these programs are going above and beyond to train the next generation of Army officers. They are the best in the nation…”
Appalachian State University's Interim Provost, Neva Specht, affixed the Award Streamer on the Battalion Guidon and the Dean and Associate Dean of the College of Fine and Applied Arts were in attendance. The Provost and College Leadership’s attendance reflected the University’s ongoing support of the program. Fire on the Mountain!
