The United States Army Cadet Command George C. Marshall Award is the highest recognition presented to an Army ROTC cadet for leadership, academic excellence, physical fitness, and overall officer potential. Named in honor of George C. Marshall, the award reflects the standard of character, intellect, scholarship, and selfless service expected of the Army’s future leaders.
Recipients must consistently demonstrate exceptional leadership under pressure, unwavering integrity, strong communication skills, and a commitment to developing others—embodying the Army Values in both performance and character.
In the Southeast Region, 4th ROTC Brigade, only 8 cadets were selected from 43 ROTC programs to receive this distinction.
Appalachian State University’s recipient, Jake Cannon, was ranked #1 among the eight awardees, distinguishing him as the top cadet in the region.
Cadet Jake Cannon, a senior from Waxhaw and a Management major, distinguished himself over four years in the Mountaineer Battalion as the program’s top Cadet through consistent, mission-focused leadership and measurable impact. At Cadet Summer Training and during his Army internship with the 1st Cavalry Division, he immediately assumed leadership roles in a Brigade exercise and was identified by company and battalion commanders as the strongest cadet they had seen, outperforming all peers. On campus, Jake led the Commandos tactics club, redesigning the assessment and selection process. As Ranger Challenge Team Captain, he led the team to a 4th place finish out of 44 teams, demonstrating tactical proficiency, physical endurance, and cohesive team leadership under pressure. He further demonstrated resilience and commitment through four consecutive years of Ranger Challenge participation and the Mountain Man Memorial March. His performance, character, and lasting contributions earned his selection for the National George C. Marshall award and participation ceremony at the Virginia Military Institute on 23 and 24 February.
