Sergeant First Class Michael Holzer

Sergeant First Class Holzer is a native of Antioch, California. He enlisted in the Army in January of 2009 as an 11X Infantryman and attended One Station Unit Training at Fort Benning, Georgia. Upon graduation, he was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 22nd Infantry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division at Fort Drum, New York.

While in 2-22IN, Sergeant First Class Holzer served as a Gunner in a heavy weapons Company. In October of 2009, he was selected to be in the Battalion Reconnaissance Platoon and placed in the Sniper section, where he deployed to Afghanistan in support of OPERATION ENDURING FREEDOM. Upon returning from Afghanistan, he earned his Expert Infantryman Badge, attended the United States Army Warrior Leaders Course, and was promoted to the rank of Sergeant.

In October of 2013, Sergeant First Class Holzer was assigned to the 3rd Squadron, 61st Cavalry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division as a Reconnaissance Platoon Squad Leader, where he deployed to Afghanistan again in support of OPERATION ENDURING FREEDOM. Upon returning, he attended the United States Army Advanced Leader’s Course and was promoted to the rank of Staff Sergeant. Sergeant First Class Holzer deployed to Afghanistan a third time in support of OPERATION RESOLUTE SUPPORT and, upon return, attended the United States Army Pathfinder School, earning his torch.

In December of 2017, he was selected to be a Recruiter for the United States Army in Long Island, New York. While serving as a Recruiter, SFC attended the United States Army Senior Leaders Course and was promoted to the rank of Sergeant First Class.

After serving three years as a recruiter, Sergeant First Class Holzer was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division as a heavy weapons Company Platoon Sergeant, where he underwent a no-notice deployment to Poland in support of OPERATION ASSURE AND DETER.

In January of 2024, Sergeant First Class Holzer was selected to be a Drill Sergeant and was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 10th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Chemical Brigade at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, where he served as Senior Drill Sergeant in a Basic Combat Training Company.

In August of 2026, Sergeant First Class Holzer was assigned to Appalachian State University as a Military Science Instructor.

Sergeant First Class Holzer’s military schools include Airborne School, Pathfinder School, Army Recruiting Course, and the United States Army Drill Sergeant Academy. His awards include the Joint Meritorious Unit Award, Meritorious Unit Commendation, Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Army Commendation Medal (4 OLC), Army Achievement Medal (1 OLC), Army Good Conduct Medal (5 loops), National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal (3 stars), Global War on Terrorism Medal, NCO Professional Development Ribbon (3), Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon (2), NATO Medal (2), Expert Infantryman Badge, Parachutist Badge, Pathfinder Badge, Recruiter Badge, and Drill Sergeant Badge.
