CPT Russell Kimmel was born and raised in Frederick, Maryland. After graduating as the valedictorian at Frederick Christian Academy, he was awarded a four-year Army ROTC scholarship and studied at McDaniel College. He graduated in 2016 with a Bachelor of Arts in Physics with a minor in German and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the Ordnance Branch. Upon accession to active duty, CPT Kimmel attended and completed the Ordnance Basic Officer Leaders Course (BOLC) and was inducted into the Ordnance Corps in February of 2016.
He was first assigned to the 84th Engineer Battalion, 130th Engineer Brigade at Schofield Barracks, Hawaii, as the Maintenance Control Officer in the Forward Support Company. Following that position, he served as the Assistant Logistics Staff Officer and Unit Movement Officer for the Battalion.
He then transitioned to the Logistics Captain Career Course at Fort Gregg-Adams, where he completed the transition from Ordnance Officer to Multifunctional Logistician in November 2022. CPT Kimmel’s previous assignments include the 82nd Airborne Division Sustainment Brigade S3 Plans. He went on to serve as the Battalion Operations Officer for the 70th Brigade Support Battalion at Camp Casey, Korea. Following his Korea assignment, he served as the BDE Plans Officer for the Airborne Division Support Brigade in the 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. Subsequently, he was selected to take command of the Headquarters Support Company in the 122nd Aviation Support Brigade in the 82nd Combat Aviation Brigade (CAB), where he deployed in 2023 to CENTCOM in support of Operation Inherent Resolve. His most recent position was the Deputy Support Operations Officer for the 82nd CAB.
CPT Kimmel has completed multiple levels of professional military education, including the SHARP Foundational Course, Captains Career Course, Support Operations Phase I, and the Unit Movement Officer Course.
His awards include a Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal (1 OLC), Army Achievement Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Korean Defense Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, and the Overseas Service Ribbon (2).
