The former Captain Alan Phillips graduated from Appalachian State with a degree in Business in 1990. While at App State, he was in the Simultaneous Membership Program as a National Guard member. He was commissioned as an Infantry Officer in the National Guard (2nd Battalion, 120th Infantry) and began his career in the lumber industry in Western North Carolina. As a small business owner, he often provided “step up” opportunities for young transitioning service members
The character of Alan, his wife, and his family was fully demonstrated in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene. The Phillips family distinguished itself through extraordinary humanitarian service during the response to Hurricane Helene in western North Carolina from fall 2024 through 2025.
In the immediate aftermath of the disaster, Alan demonstrated exceptional leadership by facilitating interagency coordination with the 18th Airborne Corps, the North Carolina National Guard, the 3rd ESC, and local law enforcement, enabling a unified response to Hurricane Helene recovery operations. He exemplified the principles of mission command providing clear intent, fostering shared understanding, and exercising disciplined initiative at a time when communication, structure, and normal authorities were breaking down. He committed significant personal resources, accepted real personal risk, and filled a critical leadership void amid systemic collapse. His actions directly supported and protected thousands.
-Created a Community Kitchen Operation that worked continuously for 60 days, ensuring that no fewer than 2,500 unique individuals received reliable, nutritious meals during a period of severe community disruption.
-Coordinated the acquisition and placement of 15 trailers and campers from private donors and nonprofit partners, providing temporary housing for 15 families who had lost their homes. Simultaneously, he established and managed a field clinic and aid station for nearly 60 days, securing the support of two physicians and procuring extensive medical supplies ranging from trauma materials to essential medications.
-Was a founding member and director of The Appalachian Rebuild Project, a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit that raised more than $600,000 for recovery operations.
The Phillips family directly improved the material, financial, and emotional well-being of thousands of individuals across western North Carolina. Alan sought no recognition for his efforts, yet the scale, impact, and humanity of his service clearly merit acknowledgment.
In addition to inclusion as an App ROTC Distinguished Alumnus, App ROTC has named an Annual Community Service Award in the Phillips Family honor.
