Lieutenant Colonel Christopher P. Kleman is a native of Lima, Ohio. After being awarded a three-year Army ROTC scholarship, he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the Aviation Branch in 2001. At that time, he graduated from Bowling Green State University with a Bachelor of Arts and Science degree in Criminal Justice.
Upon completion of the Aviation Officer Basic Course, Initial Entry Rotary Wing Qualification Course, and OH-58D Aircraft Qualification Course, LTC Kleman proceeded to Fort Polk, Louisiana, and was assigned to N Troop, 4th Squadron, 2nd Armored Cavalry Regiment, where he served as an Aeroscout Platoon Leader. After two years at Fort Polk, including a one-year tour in Iraq, the unit was reflagged as 4-6 Cavalry Squadron and moved to Fort Lewis, Washington. After moving with the unit, LTC Kleman served as a Headquarters and Headquarters Company (HHC) Executive Officer.
Upon assignment to the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment (Airborne), he completed the MH-6M Qualification Course and was further assigned to A Company, 1st Battalion, 160th SOAR(ABN), where he served as a Platoon Leader. In January 2009, LTC Kleman took command of HHC, 160th SOAR(ABN). After serving as a Company Commander, LTC Kleman moved to the 1st Battalion, 160th SOAR(ABN) S-3 shop and served as a Special Mission Unit Liaison Officer and Battalion Operations Officer. In 2012 LTC Kleman attended the Command and General Staff College (CGSC) at Ft. Leavenworth Kansas. Upon completion of CGSC he returned to the Regiment to take command of A Company, TF 1-160 from 2013-2015. After command LTC Kleman served as the Battalion Executive Officer and Battalion Operations Officer for the Special Operations Aviation Training Battalion from 2015-2017. LTC Kleman moved to Boone,NC in the summer of 2017 upon his selection for the Professor of Military Science position at Appalachian State University. In late 2017 LTC Kleman was Battalion Command Selected by the Department of the Army for an Aviation Unit.
LTC Kleman’s military education includes Aviation Officer Basic Course; OH-58D Aircraft Qualification Course; Aviation Captains Career Course; Survival, Evasion, Resistance, and Escape (SERE) Course; MH-6M Qualification Course; UH-60 Qualification Course; United States Army Command and General Staff College (CGSC); and Air Assault School. While attending CGSC, LTC Kleman earned a Master’s degree in Management from Webster University. LTC Kleman’s awards and decorations include the Distinguished Flying Cross, Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Armed Forces Service Medal, Master Army Aviator Badge, Combat Action Badge and Air Assault Badge.
LTC Kleman resides in Boone, NC with his family.
