Lieutenant Colonel Michael Zopfi  is currently serving as the Professor of Military Science and Leadership of the Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) at Appalachian State University in Boone, NC.  He was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant into Armor branch from North Georgia College in 1996.   He received a Master’s of Science in Leadership from Grand Canyon University in 2013.

His military education includes the Joint Staff Course, the  Australian Command and Staff College, the Combined Arms and Services Staff School, the Armor Officer Basic and Advanced Courses, and Air-Assault School.

LTC Zopfi’s first assignment was with 3rd Squadron, 2nd Armored Cavalry Regiment at Fort Polk, LA where he served as a Scout Platoon Leader, Troop Executive officer, Squadron Motor Officer and deployed to Bosnia-Herzegovina in support of Operation Joint Endeavor.  LTC Zopfi’s next assignment following the Armor Advanced Course was with, 1st Brigade (BDE), 3rd Infantry (IN) Division (DIV) at Fort Stewart, GA where he served as the BDE Planner and deployed to Kosovo in support of Operation Joint Guardian and Iraq for Operation Iraqi Freedom.  He was then assigned to the 3rd Battalion (BN), 69th Armor Regiment and served as the BN Motor officer before commanding Charlie Company and then Headquarters Company.  He participated in another deployment to Iraq as a commander. After his company commands, LTC Zopfi was assigned as an Armor branch career manager at US Army Human Resources Command in Alexandria, VA. Following the Command and Staff College in Canberra, Australia, LTC Zopfi was again assigned to 1 BDE, 3 ID where he joined his unit in Baghdad, Iraq and served as the BDE Chief of Operations (CHOPS) before moving down to the 5th Squadron, 7th Cavalry where he served as the Operations Officer (S3) and Executive Officer (XO).    LTC Zopfi  was then assigned to the Joint Staff, J7 in Suffolk, VA, where he served as a Joint Observer/Trainer. Battalion command selected, LTC Zopfi  is slated to take command of 2nd Squadron, 13th Cavalry, 1st Armored Division at Fort Bliss, TX after his tour as ASU’s  Professor of Military  Science and Leadership. 

LTC Zopfi’s awards include the Bronze Star with 2 oak leaf clusters (OLC), the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, the Army Meritorious Service Medal (2 OLC), the Army Commendation Medal (2 OLC), the Army Achievement Medal (1 OLC), the National Defense Service Medal, the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, the Kosovo Campaign medal with bronze star, the Iraq Campaign Medal (with 6 campaign stars), the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the Armed Forces Service Medal, the Army Service Ribbon, the Overseas Ribbon with the Numeral 3, and the NATO Medal (2nd award).  LTC Zopfi’s badges include the Combat Action Badge, Air Assault and Joint Chief Service Identification badge.  He has been inducted to the Order of St. George, Bronze Medallion.

He is married to the former Deana Mayfield of Mountain City, GA.
